Rug Description

This antique Karagashli hand-knotted in Caucasian Azerbaijan circa 1880 measuring 139 × 118 cm (4′ 6″ × 3′ 10″) has wool fleece and wool warp and weft. Minutely decorated with an incisive design, branches of forked leaves alternate, on a beautiful midnight blue background with abrash, in strict harmonic proportion, in the center, the staggered side motifs are only half-visible. The jagged polygons in the shape of göl, with bird heads inside, indicating the four directions of the sky, alternate with Karagashli flowers. The field is filled with boteh, eight-pointed stars, a variety of geometric figures, combs, S-motifs, and zoomorphic symbols. The main frame decorated with diagonal bands, is enclosed between two secondary frames with an identical grid pattern with set stylized flowers. The whole, of intense beauty, is such as to connote an environment in an unrepeatable way!
