Rug Description

Antique Caucasian Rug Shirvan. 1920. The production of Caucasian Shirvan carpets is very varied and rich in archaic symbols and motifs that we also find in other knotted carpets. In this antique Shirvan carpet we can appreciate the richness of the design, the elegance of the color combinations and the originality of the decorative composition. Very particular, in this antique Caucasian Shirvan carpet, are the borders called “oak leaf” and “chalice” on a yellow ochre background. This motif for some researchers would be the reproduction of small cruciform cartouches or medallions divided in two parts. The background of this antique Caucasian Shirvan carpet on a midnight blue, is dominated by three medallions in succession with a scalar profile, ending in an unusual representation of the “eagle” motif, only on one side. The rest of the background of this antique Shirvan carpet, is studded with small tribal geometric motifs and zoomorphic motifs. Finally, very interesting, the minor border with a “carnation” motif that embraces the entire carpet. The state of preservation of this antique Shirvan carpet is excellent, washed and carefully stored.
