Rug Description

Antique Caucasian Kazak “Chaili” Design Rug. 1900-1920. An unusual and rather rare carpet among those made in the Caucasus in the 20th century. In this antique Caucasian Kazak carpet, we can appreciate the decorative style typical of Caucasian “Chaili” carpets. The background of this antique Caucasian Kazak carpet is composed of three medallions with an octagonal perimeter in alternating colour, red on the sides and slightly compressed in the center on an ivory background. These medallions are filled with ancestral motifs belonging to the Caucasian iconographic repertoire. The background of this striking antique Kazak “Chaili” carpet is in a shade that goes from brown tones towards dark gray thanks also to the chromatic effect obtained from the small shades, abrash, that cross it. The carpet field is enriched with small rosettes, zoomorphic and anthropomorphic elements and small hooked medallions, filled in an extraordinary alternation of ocher and red colours. The borders of this antique Kazak “Chaili” or “Chajli” carpet are very well modulated and well-proportioned in alternation of “S” motifs on an ocher background, brown and white dowel motifs, with the main border filled with hexagonal motifs, which they follow one another in alternating colors. The state of conservation of this Caucasian Kazak “Chaili” carpet is excellent. The wools are soft and bright, the graphic effect archaic and magnetic, the knotting is solid and compact.
