Rug Description

Large Caucasian Runner Rug. 1900. A large Caucasian runner with a geometric design in a modular version of the “memling” gul motif. Each medallion of the seven is contained in an octagon. Inside we find the so-called “memling gul” so called due to the paintings painted by the Flemish painter of the 15th century, Hans Memling. These motifs have a cruciform shape with hooked profiles, completed in the center by other cruciform motifs with a stepped profile. The background of this antique Caucasian carpet, in midnight blue, contains ancient and ancestral symbols, including boteh motifs, zoomorphic symbols, “S” motifs and filling symbols typical of the production areas. The contrasting borders are very interesting; the ivory one contains small eight-pointed stars, the main one the Hausi motif, while the last one has the rosette motif. The wools of this extraordinary large-format Caucasian runner carpet are exceptionally soft, fluffy and bright; each contrast and motif is readable with extreme ease thanks to the definition and finesse of the design. The state of conservation of this antique Caucasian carpet in large runner format is exceptional, ready to be welcomed into a new environment.
