Rug Description
This antique Chinese Peking runner was hand-knotted between 1900 and 1920, and measure 305 × 93 cm (10′ 0″ × 3′ 0″) by woolen fleece on a cotton warp and weft. The Eight Horses motif, called Bā Jùn Tú, describes the journeys of Zhōu Mù, the fifth emperor of the Zhou dynasty, 1046 -256 BC, who is reputed for bringing great changes to the country and reigning nearly 55 years. The tale is about King Mù who dreaming of being immortal and determined to travel to Kūnlún to taste the Peaches of Immortality. A brave charioteer used his chariot to carry the king to his destination and the chariot was pulled by eight horses named after the colors of their hair. These eight horses represent the value and virtues that the revered king is supposed to embody. Each horse also conveys its auspicious meaning and symbolism. Can you imagine such a treasure in your home?
