Rug Description
This is an antique Peking rug woven in eastern China during the end of the 19th century circa 1880 – 1900. This carpet has an all-over design with five circular motifs set on an ivory open field background color. Each circular motif is made up of two phoenixes strategically positioned facing each other and possibly representing Yin and Yang. This rug is finished with two main borders of which the innermost border is designed with repeating semicircle floral motifs, while the outermost border is comprised of blossoming lotus flowers interconnected with a vine design. The two border’s backgrounds are colored with different shades of blue creating color contrast against the main field’s ivory background color. This carpet is excellent to near perfect condition with a few areas of the slightly low pile which is consistent with its age.
