Rug Description

A Large Antique Persian Bakshaish Carpet, ca 19th Century. A rare example of a large format antique Bakhshaish carpet with an “all over” design adorned with colorful “harshang” or stylized “crab” motifs. The background on a brown background shows “abrash”, a variation of tone within the same colour, and oxidation which contributes to giving a highly effective chromatic “movement”, attributing further charm and value to this magnificent antique Bakhshaish carpet. The knotting is very dense and fine, giving a precise identification of all the well-arranged and assorted details over the entire surface of the carpet. The main border of this ancient Bakhshaish carpet bears the “herati” motif with the profile of the leaves, rigid in the decorative composition lightened by their curvy profile. This antique Bakhshaish carpet fully embodies the style of the oldest carpets made in this area in the 19th century. The proportions are perfectly balanced as are the filling motifs which are magnificently chromatically matched to each other. The state of conservation of this antique Bakhshaish carpet is truly excellent considering its age.
