Rug Description
An Antique Persian Bakshaish Runner, ca 1880. Bakshaish is a small Persian village in Azerbaijan southwest from Heriz. The carpets from this area are highly appreciated and rare, often replicated in design in other areas of Iran and Azerbaijan. The knot of these carpets is generally symmetrical. In this rare example from Bakhshaish, we have a truly unusual decorative style on carpets of this type. The field is dominated by the “moharramat” motif, composed of stylized motifs that develop on parallel vertical bands across the entire field. The alternation of warm colors and traditional and tribal decorative motifs make this carpet particularly fascinating and elegant in any type of environment. The soft and lustrous wool give further added value to this Bakshaish carpet in an excellent state of preservation.
