Rug Description

Antique Persian Farahan Rug, ca 1900. A very refined antique Farahan Persian carpet with a rare poshti format (back, i.e. format of a medium-sized cushion). The decoration extends over the entire background with a “gul farang” design, a decorative motif imported from France as early as the 17th century to Iran from Azerbaijan. The gul farang, or “French” flower motif proposes the motif of the rose and the composition of the bouquets, taking inspiration from the ancient Savonnarie and Aubuosson carpets of the 16th century. The color combination is very complex and well-modulated especially considering the shades of green, which are very difficult to combine with reds and pinks. The design, very dense and well elaborated, is set in a frame on an antique pink background filled with a herati or mahi motif. Sinuous secondary borders on a midnight blue background, filled with boteh motifs in alternating directions, contain the magnificent floral decoration on an ivory background, giving a harmonious effect of tonal movement. The state of conservation of this rare Persian Farahan carpet is excellent. A real carpet to collect, not only for its high quality and state of conservation, but for the particularity of the design and its small size.
