Rug Description

Antique Persian Heriz Carpet, ca 1880. A large format antique Persian Heriz carpet. Heriz is a city in Iranian Azerbaijan not far from Tabriz. Heriz was a particularly fruitful area in the production of carpets, also involving many surrounding villages, influencing their decorative style. The traditional design, perhaps the best known, is the one present on this Heriz, characterized by an imposing geometric lobe medallion with pendants. For some, this decoration may derive from a stylization of the medallion carpets made in the nearby city of Tabriz. In this carpet on a carmine-red background, we can appreciate the finesse of the design perfectly set as a whole. The counter edges on ivory, give brilliance to the background, in which the background colors of the pendants and the central medallion stand out in midnight blue and emphasize the ocher color inside. The borders carry the Herati motif in a symposium of refined colors that alternate harmoniously, attenuating the rigor of the decoration of the field. This magnificent antique Heriz carpet is in an excellent state of conservation both in terms of yarns and colors, still warm and bright after over a century. A kind and balanced protagonist capable of making every environment unique.
