Antique Persian Heriz Serapi Carpet, ca 1880. Heriz Serapi carpets are of finer quality than the classic carpets made in the surrounding areas. Serapi is often referred to as the period of production of carpets knotted in Heriz between the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Heriz Serapi carpets are of course also defined by their typical design. Most Heriz Serapi carpets have a central medallion with spandlers at the corners. One of the most loved and appreciated background colors is light madder red with contrasting blue in the medallion sealed by two important midnight blue pendants filled with light blue. The medallion is well proportioned and enriched by midnight blue friezes which amplify the spectacular nature of the pale blue and cerulean areas before reaching the central rosette. The background is adorned with floral motifs and palmettes, leaving generous empty spaces, lightening the overall graphic effect. The borders bear the Herati “turtle” motif with an ivory profile, very well-modulated and stylistically detailed. This antique Heriz Serapi carpet has a very dense knotting and the design is clear and particularly fascinating due to the abrashes which alternate in blue and red, giving it further charm and elegance.
