Rug Description

A Pictorial Antique Persian Kashan Mohtasham Rug. 1890 ca. Kashan was the city that gave birth to several great master carpet weavers. Among these names, that of the master Hajji Mullah Mohammad Hassan Mohtasham certainly stands out, who elevated the production of carpets to true works of art. Thanks to his craftsmanship and his eclecticism, often in Kashan Mohtasham carpets, we can find a classical medallion style, all over, or celebratory or “pictorial” style carpets. In this magnificent example of a Kashan carpet, we find the representation of a mystic or dervish sitting with his Kashkul (Kashkool) nearby of a lake with fish and a snake. Fish typically represent sunlight, life and Mithras. The cartouches containing lines from an Iranian poem are well defined. As reported by the signature on one of the cartouche, it is an epic scene relating to the poet Ali Shah. This Kashan Mohtasham with a pictorial design is of very fine knotting, the materials of the highest quality make the decorative composition almost hyper-realistic, an effect obtained only thanks to the great mastery of the master Mohtasham. This Kashan Mohtasham with a pictorial design highlights not only the very high quality of the carpet but also the love for poetry, hoping for spiritual elevation from earthly life. A Kashan Mohtasham carpet of the highest quality, rare and in excellent condition.
