Rug Description
Pictorial “Shah Abbass” Antique Kashan Persian Rug, 1920 ca. A magnificent example of how the quality of Persian carpets is precious and capable of ranging across multiple decorative styles. In this Persian Kashan carpet from the early 20th century, we can perceive the scenographic variety in which all the decorative elements follow one another and evolve on the effigy of the fifth Persian Safavid shah “Shah Abbas” in office from 1587 to 1629. A celebratory carpet, this Kashan carpet in Kurk wool, of great effect and of evident noble extraction. The scene that celebrates the great Shah of Persia, by definition and quality, appears like an imperial miniature. The motifs present on the Shah’s robe, on the midnight blue throne and on the carpet on a wine-red background with a lattice motif are very defined and well executed. The Shah, in the foreground, is surrounded by lamps supported by a sinuous arch or niche, portions of which are finely decorated with modular motifs of crosses and rosettes. The border of this celebratory Kashan “Shah Abbas” carpet is very elaborate, on a midnight blue background spirals and minute floral motifs follow one another extraordinarily chiseled around the entire perimeter. The state of conservation of this Kashan carpet “Shah Abbas” design is excellent. A true “memorabilia”, a reminder of the most fruitful glories of the Safavid Persian Empire.
