Rug Description
This is a silk- and metal-thread kum kapi prayer rug. It features a head design woven by Zareh Penyamin and bears the calligraphic signature mark of his in the metal thread at the base of the central palmette. Zareh is still considered to have been the leading master weaver of his time within the Armenian workshops of Istanbul. Two of his famous pieces with the Sultan’s head are displayed in the Topkapı Palace and Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The richness and vibrancy of colour and some little details of drawing make this rug such a success. The border has a magnificent yellow colour and in the upper panel is an inscription that translates to ‘even this will pass away’.
