Textile Description
Large Antique Royal Indian Embroidery Velvet Textile with Metal Thread, 1800-1820. A very rare Indian velvet fabric embroidered with large format metallic threads on a red background. The weaving of this extraordinary royal velvet fabric is accompanied by “sequins” amplifying the richness of embroidery. The side border has a floral Greek motif, with curvilinear junctions, leaving plenty of space for the red velvet. The main border of this incredible Indian royal velvet, surrounded on both sides by sinuous and graceful green borders, develops in an intersection, creating in this conjunction a new cartouche, decorated with an open lotus flower, while the other sections of the border, I am decorated with a lotus flower in profile. In Indian tradition, this splendid flower, is considered sacred. The lotus is synonymous with beauty, prosperity and fertility. The background of this extraordinary velvet fabric, embroidered with metallic threads, is decorated with a lattice motif with a serrated leaf profile, all over, interrupted on both bases by two lions, with truly surprising details. In the middle, between two lions, elephants with royal vestments are embroidered, surmounted by noble figures. Although the Mughal or Mughal empire fell in 1707, the dynasty continued to exercise its power until 1857-1858. A true museum piece, this antique velvet fabric embroidered with metallic threads from the Indian royal era.
