Rug Description
Figurative Antique Caucasian Karabakh (Qarabag). XIX Century. Carpets made in the Karabagh area have had a very rich evolution over the centuries. Karabagh area in particular has been a very active and fertile area in the production of carpets both in the “tribal” style and in the more decorative style, inspired both by France since the 17th century and by the Persian Empire. In this very particular Karabagh carpet, in French Tapestry style, we delight in a sweet family scene where two girls are intent on fishing while holding the rod together. The scene of this antique Karabagh carpet is very rich and detailed; the effect of perspective and depth of field is clearly perceptible, obtained thanks to the architectural elements and the movement of the leaves in the reed bed. The wide borders remind us of those found in French and Flemish tapestries of the late 17th century with brown colors decorated with bouquet motifs. The particularity of this carpet, however, does not only lie in its decorative composition, the knotting also plays a decisive role, offering a visual effect similar to that of the “needle point” flat carpets. In some areas of the border you can see changes in shades of brown, corroded in some areas. The state of conservation of this antique Karabagh carpet is to be considered good, professionally washed and carefully preserved.
