Rug Description

Antique Shah Savan (SHAH SAWAN) Runner rug. 1900-1920. Rare kelleh-sized carpet attributed to the Shah Savan ethnic group. The Shah Savan are a confederation of Turkic-speaking tribes located mainly in the north-west of Iran and in various areas including Moghan, Hastrud, Veramin and other Persian localities. Shah Savan literally means “those who love the shah”, a title given by Shah Abbas to the warriors who defended the northern borders of Persia. Shah Savan knotted carpets are very rare, as the best-known production consisted of the production of kilims, sumakhs and mafrash. This rare antique Shah Savan carpet is completely made of wool and is characterized by an important “coffered” design on which imposing cruciform motifs are arranged. The rest of the background of this antique Shah Savan carpet hosts pronounced hooked cruciform motifs, surrounded by small filling motifs. The main border of this antique Shah Savan carpet is on a natural wool colored background and is adorned with small polychrome lozenges, lightening the graphic impact of the background. The colors are balanced and warm and fill the medacyls in both directions.
